Rock Stars, Sporting Spirit and Talented Performers in the Lower School
What a wonderful week of music, performance and sporting spirit across the Lower School! It has been a joy to see our children embracing opportunities to try something new, share their talents and celebrate one another’s achievements. The Lower School was filled with rock stars this Wednesday as we launched Times Tables Rock Stars. This engaging programme helps children practise their times tables and related division facts, building accuracy, speed and confidence. Knowing these facts securely also supports their learning in other areas of mathematics, from fractions to problem-solving. Thank you to Mr Eckersley, our Maths Coordinator, for organising such an enjoyable launch. Our Lower School band, Halo, added to the excitement with a fantastic performance for the students. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the singing and joined in with the dancing, creating a wonderful atmosphere. We love providing opportunities for children to perform, express themselves and develop their confidence in front of an audience. That same spirit continued at our Year 4–6 Performance Time on Thursday after school. It was a privilege to watch our students dancing, drumming, singing and playing the piano and violin. I was so proud of every performer, both for their incredible talents and for the courage and commitment they showed in sharing them with us. Thank you to the parents who came to support the children, and to Mr Gower and Mrs Maitland for organising this special event. We look forward to more Performance Times throughout the year. A huge well done to Year 1 and Year 2 for their Sports Day on Friday! It was lovely to see the children taking part so enthusiastically, encouraging their friends and proudly supporting their Houses. These events help children develop teamwork, perseverance and a sense of belonging, while enjoying being active together. Thank you to the PE Department for organising the day and to all the parents who came along to cheer on the children. Your support helped make it a very happy occasion. Our Mini Dragons have had a wonderful first term, and we have been delighted to welcome our new children and their families into the DBS community. The team has focused on building strong partnerships with families, helping every child feel safe, secure and confident in their learning environment. Families have been sharing updates from home through Tapestry, helping us learn more about each child’s interests, experiences and achievements. The children take great pride in sharing these moments, strengthening the connection between home and school. During the final two weeks of term, the theme “My Country” is helping prepare the children for DBS United Nations Day on Friday, 9th October, when Mini Dragons and Year 13 will proudly represent Thailand in the parade. This week, Daisy and Tulip Classes welcomed Year 13 students into their classrooms to meet their older buddies ahead of the celebrations. Sunflower Class are looking forward to meeting students from 13A next week. These connections across the school are a lovely opportunity for our youngest and oldest students to learn from and enjoy spending time with one another. We look forward to continuing these strong relationships and creating many more happy learning experiences next term. Thank you to all our families for your continued encouragement and support. Whether cheering from the sidelines, attending a performance or sharing a special moment from home, you play such an important part in our children’s school experience.
Headmaster's Weekly Update 2nd October 2026
Dear Parents and Guardians, We were very disappointed to have to close the school on Tuesday and disrupt learning for our students. Whilst there is always a risk that late changes to the calendar cannot accommodate everyone, 4th January was the only option for substitution. We did consider switching to online learning but with the limited notice provided by OPEC, there was not sufficient time to plan this to the standard required. It was great to see fantastic attendance at our first Upper School Parent Reps meeting this week. This is the best attendance of Upper School reps I have ever seen and the feedback given by our reps will greatly help us shape the direction we move in, in particular for Upper School grade cards and reports. After poor weather leading to the cancellation of the Y7 and 8 Field component of their Sports Day, we were pleased to see the Year 1 and 2 event go ahead this morning although it was extremely hot requiring a few modifications. We also had our first Performance time event of the year for Years 4-6 with some exceptional performances. I really enjoyed the new set up in a 'jazz club' style rather than the usual tiered seating. I can't believe we already in our last week of the half-term next week before a 2 week break. I hope to see you all at UN Day (International Day) next Friday. Best wishes, Jonny Liddell Headmaster
